TOP TAMPA MODELING AND TALENT SCAMS
1. Tampa modeling jobs advertised in the paper, on the radio, or on television.
We have NEVER seen a single one turn out to be a legitimate job, or what was advertised. Such ads are used to bait and switch aspiring models and talent into contacting the company. The aspiring models and talent are then tricked into buying overpriced modeling portfolios and actor / talent headshots.
2. Tampa modeling and talent agencies who sell modeling portfolios and headshots.
Tampa modeling and talent agencies are only allowed to make their money by obtaining jobs for models and talent and referring the talent who they represent to legitimate jobs. They are NOT in business to sell anything to models and talent; it is unethical and a conflict of interest to do so, and in Florida, it is against the law! Modeling and talent agencies caught doing this can be fined up to $5,000.00 per infraction, and they can lose their agency license!
AS A RULE OF THUMB, most professional models and talent only deal with modeling and talent agencies who are SAG affiliated. The extra oversight usually means that the agency is doing legitimate business.
ANOTHER POINT: Even if it were not illegal, an agency selling services to models and talent who they are supposed to represent and work for is unethical, and is a conflict of interest (a common theme for agencies, at any rate). Modeling and talent agencies are supposed to be in business to find work for models and talent. They are supposed to work for the models and the talent who they represent (in other words, models and talent are their employers, and not the other way around.) You will know them by what they do. Would you rather that the agency find you work, or sell you services? NEVER, EVER buy ANYTHING from a modeling and talent agency, and, to be safe, avoid anyone (such as a photographer) who they recommend or try to refer you to.
3. Tampa modeling and talent agencies who do "fashion shows" in Tampa malls.
Fashion shows are one thing, but drumming up the crowd in order to sell them modeling portfolios and headshots is another. Again, Tampa modeling and talent agencies are not allowed to make money by selling services to models and talent. It is illegal to do so!
4. Any modeling or talent job offer which claims that no experience is necessary.
Do you think that any legitimate modeling or talent job is going to hire someone who is new and unproven? Modeling and acting is not not easy, and it takes experience to book those jobs, especially high-level modeling jobs such as "major department store fashion shows". How do you get experience? Learn. We do not recommend going to any modeling school, acting school, to to buy any service from anyone advertising modeling and talent jobs. To get experience, models and talent usually do it the following way:
1. Invest in a modeling portfolio of talent / acting headshots from a professional photographer who does not trick you into buying their services by baiting you with modeling and talent job offers.
1A. Models: One you have your modeling portfolio and composite cards, you can learn the business by booking entry-level print work or promotional modeling. For print work, your portfolio should sell you on your ability to pull off the modeling looks that the jobs require. For promotional modeling, you don't even need a portfolio or comps (although they don't hurt). Snap shots will do, and at an average of $15.00 per hour, models who want to specialize in promotional modeling will find it difficult to justify the expense of investing in a portfolio and composite cards. Models can learn the business through the experience of booking modeling jobs, working modeling jobs, and working upwards toward more difficult modeling jobs. Fashion shows take a lot of experience to pull off, so don't even consider this unless you have been modeling for a while, and have a few small shows under your belt. Models, also, don't go to, or pay for, any modeling school! None of them are worth it! Modeling schools are not cost effective, and you will not be able to justify the expense.
1B. Actors: You may require training, but be cautious about acting schools. It is far better to find a good actor (like Tampa's Jack Amos), and pay them to teach you. Also, many actors find that community theater is a great way to obtain on-the-job training. Other actors can teach you far more than any Tampa acting school that we know of.
1C. Talent: You may or may not require much training, depending on what you do. Most singers can obtain voice lessons, but schools are usually a waste of time and money. Dancers, however, usually require training at an accredited dance school. Check those references! In the world of professional dancing, club dancing will not cut it. You will need school, especially for competitive dancing such as ballet.
Aspiring Tampa models and talent: Are you even qualified to be considered for any modeling job, casting, audition, or role?
If you are a Tampa model, actor, or talent who does not have a professional portfolio or headshots, you are not qualified to audition or to book any talent jobs! Many Tampa talent job offers are not really jobs at all, but rather bait to get people who are interested to respond. Once you respond, they will tell you that you can not be considered for the talent job unless you get a portfolio or photographs done through them first. The Talent job scam will try to sell you services regardless if you need them or not. If you are qualified with a talent portfolio or professional headshots, they will tell you that they cannot be used and that you will still have to obtain services from them. If you are stupid enough to fall for this, and invest in their services, the job will either be something that was already available on a free modeling, acting, or talent job resource which you could have submitted to yourself, or the "job" mysteriously is no longer available. Regardless, you won't book any job which would justify the poor investment into their services.
Tampa models and talent: Avoid the following........
Tampa modeling and talent agencies before you invest in a professional modeling portfolio or talent / actor headshots. Can you be sure that the photographer who they are referring to is not illegally paying them for the referal. It is against the law for any modeling and talent agency to make money from modeling portfolio photography, headshots, or any talent development service!
Florida State Statute 468.410 Prohibition against registration fees; referral. - (1) A talent agency may not charge a registration fee. (2) No talent agency shall, as a condition to registering or obtaining employment for any applicant or artist, require the applicant or artist to subscribe to, purchase, or attend any publication, postcard service, advertisement, resume service, photography service, school, acting school, workshop, acting workshop, or video or audiotapes.
Tampa modeling and talent agencies are only permitted to make money by booking models and talent into jobs. They are not allowed to make money from services which are offered to models and talent or referals to others, such as photographers.
What if they are not a modeling and talent agency, but still advertise modeling jobs and acting jobs?
How do they make their money? If they are not a modeling and talent agency, they cannot make any money by following through on what they are advertising. In other words, they spend money advertising jobs that they are not allowed to make money by referring models and talent to. If they are not a licensed modeling and talent agency, and they do make money by referring models and talent into those jobs, then they are comitting a Felony of the 3rd Degree as defined by Florida State Statutes.
If they cannot make money by referring models and talent into the jobs that they advertise, how do they make their money? Why is it that they advertise modeling and talent jobs, and then turn around and try to sell the models and talent who respond to the job ads overpriced modeling portfolios and actor talent headshots? Could it be deceptive advertising? If it is, then it is technically fraud. Fraud, also, is a felony. Deceptive trade practices mislead people and trick them into contacting the advertiser. The advertised job is not filled, and the people are then sold services instead. Deceptive trade practices are also known as bait and switch. They are illegal, and unethical business practices. Any business relationship, such as that between a customer and the business, requires trust. Can you trust anyone who has to trick you into doing business with them?
